So, I’ve recently begun to work in an office once again, as opposed from home.

I can’t complain. In many ways I prefer to work in an office; instead of having to shoot off emails, for the most part I can just lean over to the next office and say whatever I need, request whatever I need, et cetera, in addition to being able to see things as they happen or from the other person’s screen.

There are pros and cons to each. Depending upon your level of discipline, of course, more or less work can be done from each.

From home I experienced somewhat of a lack of discipline as far as rising and sleeping went. I have an erratic sleeping schedule when I’m off of a schedule for a while; well, okay, I simply develop my own schedule, for better or for worse. On the same token, however, I still got things done, and found myself efficient; this is mostly due to my own discipline, however, as I did advanced classes in high school which taught me to take initiative and simply get things done. Good thing they transferred over to me as a designer!

In Las Vegas, however, I’ll admit that there are quite a few opportunities for office jobs similar to what I have now. One of the things I like in the office is the fact of occasional free food, companionship, and generally speaking I don’t have to pay for my own work-related supples (tax deductible or not). I’m not one to get micro-managed however; I still have a tendency to get things done by the time they are needed, so I’ve honestly ver rarely had to put up with that.

I suppose it just varies according to the individual. Some people do better in an office, and others either don’t have that opportunity given current economic circumstances, or perhaps find themselves too micro-managed. I suppose the best thing a designer can do is simply evaluate themselves; in either case, discipline is definitely the most important factor in making the decision about whether or not to be freelance or office space.
